October saw new FREE antivirus offering from AVG and Microsoft. If you’re currently shelling out £40 a year for (the slightly better than is was) Norton AV, then put your credit card back in your wallet and check out where to get a product 100% cheaper
If you don’t mind being ‘upsold’ then AVG makes a great, lightweight, anti-virus product for the home. It’s fast, efficient has a proven track record, and are now up to version 9. The professional version we give away free with our contracts, and after 2 years of use it’s still our anti-virus of choice. It can be downloaded free of charge here.
The newer contender is Microsoft Security Essentials, it is though built on the previously paid for OneCare. Microsoft has essentially developed it to try to reduce the number of virus infected machines of the developing world. It runs slightly lighter than AVG (so won’t slow down your computer as much) it’s not though a feature rich and the speed difference is only minor, so unless AVG trying to force you to buy the paid for version drives you up the wall then this should be second choice.
