August 2009 Newsletter – Snow or 7?
We’ve been using Microsoft’s new operating system (Windows 7) here for the last few months and have just checked out Apple’s new offering ‘Snow Leopard’. Both look pretty tasty, but for the improvements over their last offering, Microsoft has to take the biscuit. Although one notable addition to MacOS is the out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange, meaning Apple now have better integration on the OS for Microsoft’s industry standard collaborative platform than Microsoft do.
The new version of MacOS (10.6) offers greater speed, smaller space, Microsoft Exchange integration (so you can sync iCal and Contacts with your server), refinement of the sharing (again), and a whole host of other benefits, if you’re a speed freak then it’s well worth the ~£50. It ships on the 28th August, check it out here www.apple.com/macos
The new version of Windows (7) is essentially what Windows Vista should have been, it is now a happy replacement for WindowsXP, all the annoying features of Vista seem to be sorted. Microsoft have also managed to work wonders with the taskbar affording genuine advances in the user interface.
Compatibility for older applications has been improved (thanks to genuine WindowsXP mode), and the whole OS seems more responsive and fluid. The best way to describe Windows 7 would be that it’s Windows Vista without the annoying bits! Windows7 ships 22nd October, check it out here http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx
