IFA 2012: Sony Product Announcement

Sony have just unveiled their new line of products at the IFA trade show in Berlin. Amongst this year’s offerings are the new Xperia T, V, and J smartphones. The Xperia T is now Sony’s global flagship, featuring a 4.6-inch screen, featuring 1080p HD video playback and a 13mp camera. Meanwhile the Xperia V sports LTE connectivity and ‘one touch’ NFC technology that’s designed for connecting to other
phones and NFC speakers/headphones. All to be expected, but it also includes “highest level of water resistance available in a smartphone” which is great now the British summer is done.

Sony have also introduced the new Xperia Tablet S, running Android 4.0, which looks smart with a fold-back design. There’s some nice features like ‘guest mode’ allowing controlled access for specific users, and some nice, small, pop-up apps for everyone. TheXperia Tablet S will hit the shelves on September 7th and will set you back £250-£400 depending on which of the 16, 32 or 64GB models you pick.

Computer-wise Sony unveiled its new VAIO Tap20, a 20-inch touch enabled tabletop, sporting the equally touch-friendly Windows 8. It’s also loaded with NFC technology so it will be interesting to see what application this has with the new Xperia phones. Perhaps most importantly the USP here is its dual-position stand which can tilt the device between upright and lying flat. This could prove to be particularly appealing for consumers but in such a competitive market it’s hard to predict.

Drawing the announcement to a close Sony also displayed 2 more devices. A new camera: the NEX-5R, with improved controls, touch-screen, improved focus and in-built WiFi; and a massive 84-inch 4K WiFi TV. Controllable with a smartphone app, the mammoth TV hasn’t got a price tag yet but should be available before the year’s out.

Keep your eyes peeled for the inevitable wave of feeback from these releases and product announcements from other companies over the next few days at IFA.
